Emergency Plumbing for Knowle’s 1920s and 1930s Homes

A lot of Knowle’s housing was built between the wars. These homes are solid and well built, but many still run on older plumbing set-ups that cause their own kind of emergency.

Overflowing Loft Tanks in Knowle Homes

Plenty of homes from this era still have a cold water tank in the loft. Inside is a float valve that shuts off the supply when the tank is full. When it wears out, the tank keeps filling. Water then pours from the overflow pipe or, worse, through the bedroom ceiling.

Rusting Galvanised Tanks

Older steel tanks rust from the inside. A pinhole leak can turn into a split very quickly. If your tank is galvanised steel, it’s worth replacing before it fails.

What to Do Before Your Plumber Arrives

If your loft tank is overflowing, turn off the stopcock to stop the supply. Then open the cold taps in the bathroom to drain the tank down. Ring us, and we’ll replace the faulty valve or the whole tank if needed.

Old Pipework in Interwar Houses

Interwar homes may still have original pipework hidden in walls and under floors. If we find any that looks close to failing, we’ll tell you while we’re there.

Loft tank overflowing in Knowle? Turn the stopcock off and call 0117 939 1421. We’ll stop it at the source.

Burst Pipe Repairs in Knowle, BS4

Knowle sits on high ground above the city, and it feels the cold. When temperatures drop below freezing, exposed pipes are the first to go.

Where Pipes Freeze First on Knowle’s High Ground

  • Pipes in unheated lofts, especially near the eaves
  • Supply pipes in garages, lean-tos and outbuildings
  • Outside taps that haven’t been isolated
  • Pipe runs on north-facing outside walls

How to Spot a Frozen Pipe

If a tap gives you nothing on a freezing morning, a pipe may be frozen. Don’t use a blowtorch or boiling water on it. Instead, open the tap and warm the pipe gently with a hairdryer or a hot water bottle. If the pipe has already split, turn off the stopcock first.

Stopping Burst Pipes Next Winter

Lagging exposed pipes costs very little. It’s also worth fitting an isolation valve to your outside tap, so you can shut it off and drain it each autumn. We can do both while we’re with you.

Going Away in Winter?

Keep your heating on low while you’re away. A cold empty house is where frozen pipes do the most damage.

Pipe burst after a cold snap? Call 0117 939 1421 and our south Bristol team will get you back up and running.

We called MPW Group SW Ltd to request an emergency plumber after our macerator toilet got blocked. They were able to send someone out within the hour and gave the hourly price in advance so we knew how much we would potentially be spending which was a huge bonus. The Plumber (Zach I think it was) came out and was amazing. He was polite, explained everything and then removed the blockage, checked the drains and also took time to ensure that the blades in the unit were still in working order. Once he was done we had a call from the owner to check that all was ok and that we were happy with the service. He informed us how much it would cost and advised he would send the invoice across. We were happy with the amount considering the situation we were in. Thank you! Much appreciated and apologies for the delay in the review. I would recommend MPW in the future.

We had our air conditioning installed today by Dave and Ben from MPW, and we could not be happier with the service we received. From our initial enquiry, the response time was incredibly quick, and the excellent service continued right through to the installation. Dave and Ben were professional, friendly, hardworking, and incredibly tidy. Their workmanship was excellent, and they took real pride in doing a first class job. They were happy to answer any questions and made the whole installation process smooth and stress free. A special mention has to go to Ben. He really gives you faith in the younger generation. He was polite, friendly, respectful, and worked incredibly hard throughout the day. He is a real credit to MPW. We would not hesitate to recommend MPW to anyone looking for air conditioning installation. Fantastic customer service, a quick response from the very beginning, excellent workmanship, and a genuinely great team. Thank you, Dave, Ben and Matt.

Emergency Plumber Knowle FAQs

Older homes come with their own quirks, especially in winter. These are the questions Knowle homeowners ask us most, from loft tanks to frozen pipes.

My Loft Tank Is Overflowing. What Should I Do?

Turn off the stopcock and run the cold taps to drain the tank. Then call us to replace the float valve.

Can You Replace an Old Cold Water Tank in My Knowle Home?

Yes. We can swap a rusty galvanised tank for a modern plastic one, usually in a single visit.

Should I Drain My System if I’m Away in Winter?

You don’t usually need to. Keeping the heating on low is normally enough to stop pipes freezing.

Is It Worth Switching to a Combi to Get Rid of My Loft Tank?

Often, yes. A combi boiler runs off the mains, so you no longer need a loft tank or a hot water cylinder. It’s not right for every home, though, especially with low water pressure or several bathrooms. See our boiler installation page, or ask us when we visit.

Not sure if it’s urgent? Ring 0117 939 1421 and we’ll tell you honestly.
