Clifton’s Georgian buildings look solid from the outside. Inside, many have been split into flats, with plumbing that has been added to and rerouted for 200 years. When something gives way, water travels fast between floors. MPW Group answers emergency calls across Clifton 24 hours a day.

Report a Leak in Your Clifton Flat or Home
Let us know your address, which floor you’re on and what’s happening. If water is coming through the ceiling right now, call 0117 939 1421 for the fastest response.
Plumbing Emergencies in Clifton’s Converted Flats
Most of our Clifton plumbing call-outs come from flats rather than whole houses. That changes how a leak behaves, and how quickly it needs sorting.
When the Leak Is Coming From Upstairs
A stain spreading across your ceiling usually means water from the flat above. Knock on their door first, as they may not know anything is wrong. If nobody answers, call us. We can often trace the source from the communal pipework and isolate it.
One Stopcock for the Whole Building
In many converted townhouses, a single stopcock controls the water to every flat. It’s often in the basement, a communal cupboard or under the front steps. Find out where yours is now, before you need it. If it’s stiff, don’t force it, because old valves snap easily.
Basement Flats and Blocked Drains
Basement flats sit lowest, so they’re the first to suffer when a shared drain blocks. Water coming back up through a shower tray or floor gully is the tell-tale sign. We’ll clear the blockage and tell you whether it’s a private drain or Wessex Water’s responsibility.

Emergency Repairs in Clifton’s Period Homes
Clifton is famous for its Georgian crescents and townhouses. That history is a big part of the area’s appeal, but it also makes plumbing repairs more delicate.
Original Features Come First
Ornate ceilings, cornicing and old floorboards don’t take kindly to rushed work. When we trace a hidden leak, we’ll talk to you before lifting or cutting anything. We’ll always try the least damaging route first, such as a bath panel, an access hatch or the floor above.
Listed Buildings
A lot of homes in Clifton are listed. Stopping water damage comes first, and like-for-like repairs rarely affect a building’s character. Bigger alterations afterwards may need listed building consent, so check Historic England’s guidance or speak to the council’s conservation team before planning anything major.
Old Pipework in Old Buildings
Period homes often have a mix of copper, lead and plastic pipes from different decades. Joints between old and new materials are a common failure point. If we spot one that’s likely to cause trouble, we’ll tell you while we’re there.
Getting to You
Clifton’s hills and residents’ parking zones can slow anyone down. When you ring, tell us the nearest place to stop and we’ll plan around it.

We called MPW Group SW Ltd to request an emergency plumber after our macerator toilet got blocked. They were able to send someone out within the hour and gave the hourly price in advance so we knew how much we would potentially be spending which was a huge bonus. The Plumber (Zach I think it was) came out and was amazing. He was polite, explained everything and then removed the blockage, checked the drains and also took time to ensure that the blades in the unit were still in working order. Once he was done we had a call from the owner to check that all was ok and that we were happy with the service. He informed us how much it would cost and advised he would send the invoice across. We were happy with the amount considering the situation we were in. Thank you! Much appreciated and apologies for the delay in the review. I would recommend MPW in the future.Posted on Google![]()

We had our air conditioning installed today by Dave and Ben from MPW, and we could not be happier with the service we received. From our initial enquiry, the response time was incredibly quick, and the excellent service continued right through to the installation. Dave and Ben were professional, friendly, hardworking, and incredibly tidy. Their workmanship was excellent, and they took real pride in doing a first class job. They were happy to answer any questions and made the whole installation process smooth and stress free. A special mention has to go to Ben. He really gives you faith in the younger generation. He was polite, friendly, respectful, and worked incredibly hard throughout the day. He is a real credit to MPW. We would not hesitate to recommend MPW to anyone looking for air conditioning installation. Fantastic customer service, a quick response from the very beginning, excellent workmanship, and a genuinely great team. Thank you, Dave, Ben and Matt.
Landlords, Letting Agents and Student Lets in Clifton
With the University of Bristol on the doorstep, a lot of Clifton homes are rented out. Plumbing emergencies in rented properties need a slightly different approach.
If You’re a Tenant
Report the problem to your landlord or letting agent straight away, ideally in writing. If water is pouring in and you can’t reach them, turn off the water and call us. Take photos of any damage as you go.
If You’re a Landlord or Agent
You’re legally responsible for keeping water, sanitation and heating in working order. The GOV.UK guide to repairs in rented homes sets out what’s expected. We’re happy to deal with your tenants directly, so you don’t have to be there at 2am. If you need it for your contractor records, our Gas Safe registration number is 575088.
Tenants Without Heating
A rental with no heating in January can’t wait until Monday. Landlords and agents can book our emergency boiler repairs on a tenant’s behalf, and we’ll arrange access with them directly.
Outside Clifton?
We cover the whole city. See our emergency plumbing service across Bristol, or our neighbouring Redland emergency plumbers page.

Clifton Emergency Plumbing FAQs
Living in a flat or a period building raises questions you don’t get in a standard semi. Here are the ones Clifton residents, landlords and students ask us most, with straight answers.
Do You Cover Hotwells, Cliftonwood and Whiteladies Road?
Yes. Every part of BS8 is covered, from Hotwells and Cliftonwood up to Clifton Village and Whiteladies Road.
Can You Get Into a Building With a Shared Entrance?
Yes. When you call, let us know about any buzzer, key safe or neighbour who needs to let us in.
Who Pays if the Leak Came From Another Flat?
It depends on your lease and insurance. Buildings insurance often covers damage between flats. We’ll find the source, so you’ll have the facts for any claim.
Will You Damage My Ceiling Finding the Leak?
We’ll always try non-invasive checks first. If we do need to open anything up, we’ll explain why and agree it with you beforehand.
Flat, townhouse or student let, call 0117 939 1421 and we’ll be on our way.
