Heat Pump or Gas Boiler? An Honest Comparison for Bristol Homes

Viessmann Vitocal air source heat pump installed outside a home

Thinking about a heat pump now that your boiler is due for replacement? We’re Viessmann boiler installers and MCS-accredited heat pump engineers, so we fit both. Here’s a straight comparison.

How They Differ

A gas boiler heats water quickly to around 60 to 70°C, which suits short bursts of heating. An air source heat pump draws warmth from the outside air and runs at lower temperatures for longer. For every unit of electricity it uses, it produces 3 to 4 units of heat. You’ll usually need a hot water cylinder, and sometimes larger radiators.

Costs and Grants

A new boiler is cheaper upfront. However, the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives homeowners in England and Wales up to £7,500 off a heat pump. Off-grid homes that use oil or LPG can get £9,000 until 31 March 2027. Your MCS-certified installer applies for the grant on your behalf and deducts it from the quote.

Does Your Home Suit a Heat Pump?

Heat pumps work best in well-insulated homes with space for an outdoor unit. Many of Bristol’s solid-walled Victorian terraces may need insulation upgrades first, while post-war semis and newer builds are often a natural fit. Most installations don’t need planning permission, but check the Planning Portal if you live in a conservation area.

When a Boiler Is Still Best

A new Viessmann boiler, fitted in 1 to 2 days, may be the smarter choice for now if:

  • your boiler has failed and you need heat fast
  • space is tight
  • budget is the priority

We’ll tell you honestly, even if that means sticking with gas.
