When your boiler breaks down, the big question is whether it’s worth fixing. We both repair and install boilers, so here’s the honest answer.
How Old Is Your Boiler?
With regular servicing, most modern boilers last 10 to 15 years. You’ll find your boiler’s age on its data badge or on your installation certificate. Boilers fitted before 2005 are usually non-condensing, which means they waste far more gas than today’s models. The Energy Saving Trust explains the difference.
When to Repair
If your boiler is under 10 years old and has been reliable, a repair usually makes sense. Faults like a failed pump, fan or diverter valve can often be fixed in one visit. Check your warranty first, because the repair may be covered.
A useful rule of thumb for older boilers: if the repair would cost close to half the price of a new boiler, get a replacement quote before you decide.
When to Replace
It’s probably time for a new boiler if:
- it breaks down every winter
- parts are getting hard to find
- your bills keep rising
- some rooms never quite get warm
Sooty marks, a yellow flame or a CO alarm going off all need urgent attention from a Gas Safe engineer.
